- Respond immediately to natural and man-made disasters.
- Rebuild community centers in hard-hit areas to meet grassroots needs.
- Recover by building resiliency to individuals, families, and communities.
The impact of giving is currently being felt in the Bahamas, as well as Puerto Rico. The HEART 9/11 Hurricane Dorian Response Team has been on the ground in the Bahamas since September 6th building a mobile field hospital with Samaritans Purse and getting the job done to help all those in need. The Team has reported that the devastation in the Bahamas is difficult to comprehend.
HEART 9/11 Background
HEART 9/11 is a team of NYPD, FDNY, PAPD and the greater NY Building Trades that came together during the 9/11 rescue and recovery mission. The organization transfers its skills as first responders to victims of man-made and natural disasters. HEART 9/11 has responded to over 115 missions throughout the continental United States, Ecuador, Haiti, and Puerto Rico. Its volunteers are highly-skilled first responders, EMTs and construction experts that can assist in all phases of disaster response and recovery - incident management, hazard debris removal, damage assessments, structural assessments, and rebuild/repair. HEART 9/11 teams will arrive with all of the tools and supplies needed to be a self-sustaining operation.
HEART 9/11 was in Puerto Rico immediately after Hurricane Maria devastated the island. Its volunteers removed countless trees from roadways and roofs of homes, the safety and security of the residents being paramount to the HEART 9/11 mission. They also provided medical assessments for isolated young and elderly residents. Once the initial emergency response was concluded HEART 9/11 transitioned to rebuilding Puerto Rico in the areas of Playita, Orocovis, and Morovis. Following these initial responses, HEART 9/11 implemented a pre-apprentice program with Ramón Rodríguez and 100Roofs where its volunteers could transfer their skills to local residents in Puerto Rico so that they could rebuild their own communities.
To date, HEART 9/11 has mobilized 830 volunteers who provided over 50,000 hours of skilled volunteer labor and secured over 300 roofs utilizing upgraded building standards. HEART 9/11
